The Home Stretch
It’s been a couple days since my last post and we’ve made a lot of progress getting these songs recorded. We finished programming all of the drums. We came up with some dope arrangements and used some original drum samples that we created from scratch. Then we sweetened up the guitar parts because Pat likes his “guitars like [he] like [his] woman; fat, ugly and loud.” His words not mine lol. We used the same custom 15 watt amp except we swapped in a Electro Harmonix tube for a different sound. And then swapped in an Amperex Bugle Boy Tube to get another sound on another guitar track. All this tube talk reminds me of a valuable lesson I learned from Pat during these sessions: “Bad sounding tubes are still better than broken tubes.” Oh so true.
After we finished the guitar parts (yay they’re all done!), we were ready to start recording vocals on Tuesday! We tried out a few old neumann tube mics and ended up using a cheap audio technica mic instead. It just sounded good. I finished vocals on one song on Tuesday night and I knocked out two more songs on Wednesday afternoon. So I have one more song to sing today and we’ll be ready to add some little musical “sparklies” to finish off the tracks. Which also reminds me of two more lessons I learned from Pat during these sessions and I quote: “TMS = Too Much Synthesizer” (a crime we will not commit in my songs
); and “It’s such a fine line between stupid and clever” (a very important balance which I think we are achieving). And then on to the mix! Can’t wait!

Actually, I think I jacked that last quote from “Spinal Tap” or Possibly maybe… Judge Judy.
